Goodbye Sun Ridge… Hello America

The time has finally arrived.  The house has been sold and what belongings we still own are either with us in our motor home or in storage. We’ve also sold Claudia’s car and my beloved golf cart.  After 10 years of summer weekends and the past 110 days full time, we’ve given up our campsite at “the Ridge” and spent our final weekend as full timers saying goodbye to our Sun Ridge family.  On August 28th, Melissa and Josh blessed us with our newest granddaughter, Grace, and we were able to spend a few days of quality time taking care of Jon while they were busy preparing Grace for her arrival home.
This past weekend we totally surprised my mom with a weekend camping party to celebrate her 80th birthday.  It was a beautiful weekend and we were
able to enjoy it with our entire family, including all six of our grandchildren.  It was a wonderful way to end the summer before heading off.  We’ve decided on the basic route we plan to follow and it’s time to hit the road.  We’re anxious to visit Gettysburg, DC, Williamsburg, the Outer banks and Charleston among other places as we head south to Florida where we’ll spend the better part of the winter.  We’ll be making stops in St. Augustine and Disney World as we continue south to Miami where we’ll watch the Patriots play in Miami Stadium.  We’ll hang around Miami through the end of December so that we can be at the beach with our feet in the sand for Christmas. We’ll be in Key West for New Year’s Eve.  We discovered that the Key West version of ringing in the New Year is a 6 foot red shoe with a drag queen aboard descending into the crowd on Duval Street.  Sure sounds like fun to us!  After this, our plans are more open ended but we do know we’ll be leaving Florida and heading west along the southern border of the US, stopping wherever we like.  We plan to arrive in San Diego mid-March and then take our time heading north through California, Oregon and Washington.  After that, it’ll be a drive through several national parks in the Canadian Rockies before we reach our ultimate goal of Dawson Creek in British Columbia mid-June to meet up with the other RVers who will join us on our 48 day RV tour through Alaska.  One of the best parts of this whole adventure will be the places and stops along the way that we haven’t even thought about or know about yet. We’ll eventually be back home by next Labor Day to reunite with family and friends.  Of course we’ll miss everyone as we travel but we’re anxious to get started and to share our adventures.  We hope you’ll check back with us and we’ll do our best to keep our site as updated as possible.  It’s time to hit the road.  Oh yeah!!!!  Ed

Ed and Claudia--I'm excited by your trip and I'm not even going!! I love hitting the road and I'm sure you will have a great year. Isn't retirement grand? So, do you have a campsite in Miami? Let me know what the name is. I tried to find one near South Beach. The only one listed is closed due to hurricane damage. Looking forward to your reading your posts and seeing the pictures.

Hi Sandra... We'll be staying at the Miami Everglades Campground from mid-December till just before New Year's. It's about a 40 minute drive to South and Haulover Beaches where we'll be regular visitors. We picked it primarily because it was centrally located to other areas we wanted to visit and looked like a nice place to relax over Christmas. Keep an eye on where we are and let us know if you're ever in our vicinity. Take care!!

Hi Guys:

I hope you have a wonderful time! I will be particularly interested to read about your trip to Gettysburg as Jane and I want to go there sometime to visit the battlefields.

Ed - Glad to hear you're on the move. I'm sure you're pretty excited.

I'm looking at a late December closing date on the new house. I hope you'll be able to stop by before leaving FL. I'll email you the address as the date draws near.

Good Luck!

Ed and Claudia always dreamed of retiring and travelling the country in their motorhome.  They retired in 2013 and this is the continuing story of their adventures on the road.
