-- The Year of the Virus --
Our seventh year on the road was a year like no other and one that we never imagined when we retired over seven years ago. Our winter of 2019 began like any other at Sandpipers Resort in the Rio Grande Valley with gorgeous weather and plenty of activities including water volleyball, tennis, pickle ball and bowling. We also enjoyed our usual daily happy hours and other social events with so many of our friends. The arrival of the Coronavirus in March of 2020 changed all that. It had a significant impact on most people, and in several different ways depending on individual choices. Claudia and I, along with many of our friends here at Sandpipers made the decision to practice social distancing. That meant that we immediately began keeping our distance from all individuals as well as all indoor activities. No more tennis, pickle ball or volleyball. No more dining out, dances, pub nights or jam sessions and we discontinued our daily happy hours. The hardest part was the cancelling of all travel plans during the summer of 2020 and not being able to see our families. Instead we hunkered down here in Texas to wait it all out. I began playing online games on a PS4 while Claudia began making puzzles. In addition, we started working on improvements to our home. We completed an outdoor shower that was very nice to have during our summer temperatures of over 100 degrees. We also finished up some indoor painting, built ourselves a new back porch and performed a lot of necessary maintenance. It was a lot easier to justify spending our time on that stuff when there wasn’t really much else to do. In October, 2020 we decided on a short RV trip just to get away by ourselves but that ended up being cancelled due to a heart issue I began having that resulted with two stents being placed in an artery to my heart. Since then both Claudia and I have stayed mentally and physically fit in order to be able to proceed with our 2021 plans. Claudia and I both received our vaccine shots in February and will return to the road beginning in May. Our focus this summer will be visits with our families. Although a virus like this was never in our plans when we hit the road full time almost eight years ago we took the cautious route so that we could stay healthy and continue our lifestyle for years to come. Claudia and I still have many places on our list to visit as well as many other places that we want to see again. Now that we see some light at the end of the tunnel we’re looking forward to hitting the road once again and beginning our 2021 travels to enjoy the “Year of the Family Reunions”.
